Punjab Education Minister directs private schools to stop forcing parents to buy books and uniforms from preferred vendors

The Punjab Education Minister Vijay Inder Singla on Saturday directed all private schools in the state to comply with its order not to force parents to buy books and uniforms from preferred vendors. The state has also prohibited the sale of books and uniforms within school premises. This applies to all schools affiliated to the CBSE, ICSE and Punjab School Education Boards (PSEB). The move took place after reports emerged alleging that parents of school children were being exploited by private schools who had special tie-ups with preferred vendors. The state has also issued a directive for textbooks saying that private schools should now upload a list of textbooks on the school’s website and leave it up to the parents to decide whether or not they want to buy them, also leaving the choice of vendors up to them. This has been done to curb the practice of private schools tying up with private publishers who simply change the order of the chapters of the previous years’ books and publish them as latest edition books that were earlier made compulsory for all students to purchase.
