Due to safety concerns highlighted by parents, some schools in Tamil Nadu have decided to lift their ban on cell phones being brought into the premises. This, however, comes with some limitations such as handing the phones to the teachers and switching them off during class hours. PS Higher Secondary School, Hari Shri Vidyalaya, Vael’s Vidyashram and Sri Sankara senior secondary school are some of the schools that have decided to allow phones on campus. However, there are some schools in the state such as Chinmaya Vidyalaya Higher Secondary School that still stick to their strict ban on cell phones as they believe that they lead to distractions and cause unproductivity. “We have school telephones that can be used during an emergency. And if we find any child carrying a cell phone we confiscate it and return it to his/her parents only at the end of the academic year,” said P Vijayalakshmi, principal of Chinmaya Vidyalaya Higher Secondary School.
